A Multigenerational Approach to Prevention & Treatment of SUDs

Peter Jackson, MD

Our speaker is Peter Jackson, MD, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine. Through both environmental and genetic factors, substance use disorders frequently perpetuate from one generation to another within families. Treating individuals struggling with substance use disorder in isolation often represents a missed opportunity to provide both treatment and preventative measures for others in their family who have been directly impacted by, are at risk or also struggle with a substance use disorder.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize the role genes and shared environment play in multigenerational perpetuation of substance use disorders
  2. Understand familial risk and protective factors for substance use
  3. Identify key stages of the individual and family life cycle for multigenerational interventions
  4. Increase confidence to invite family members to support treatment and participate in preventive measures
  5. Recognize opportunities for prevention of further harm from substance use disorders, no matter the age or life stage of the individual whom we are treating
