Pharmacotherapies
We provide protocols and virtual consultation services to support the delivery of evidence-based pharmacotherapies for treating tobacco use. This includes support with:
- Nicotine replacement therapy (e.g., gum, patches, lozenges)
- Varenicline
- Bupropion
Clinical Support Aids
We can help you choose and implement the resources to support your patients’ treatment adherence, outcomes, and retention. We can send resources, hardware, and/or software to your practice, and provide support with their implementation and ongoing use.
- Evidence-based assessments for evaluating patients’ smoking severity
- Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (for the clinical setting)
- Other measurement instruments (for the research setting)
- Protocols and patient education for setting quit dates and implementing smoking cessation programs
- Hardware and training for biochemical monitoring of patients’ recent smoking (e.g., hand-held carbon monoxide monitors, dipsticks for urine and saliva cotinine testing)
- As-needed or ongoing consultation by our UVM CORA center faculty with direct expertise in developing and implementing smoking cessation interventions

Behavioral Therapies
We will help your team identify, customize, and implement evidence-based therapies for supporting your patients’ smoking reduction or cessation.
- Incentive-based behavioral interventions customized to promote biochemically-verified smoking abstinence
- Counseling to support the use of smoking cessation pharmacotherapies
- The 5 A’s model for treating tobacco use and dependence (for people who are currently motivated to quit)
- The 5 R’s model and harm reduction approaches (for people who are not currently motivated or ready to quit)
- Support with implementing internet- and smartphone-based interventions for smoking reduction or cessation
Professional Support and Educational Materials
We provide consultation, coaching, and hands-on support across a wide range of areas and platforms to any professionals seeking information, training, and resources in science-based methods.
- One-on-one virtual consultation and coaching with our Clinician Advisory Board members, who are community providers with deep expertise in treating complex patients with opioid use disorder (OUD), substance use disorders (SUDs), and other co-occurring issues
- UVM CORA Clinician Office Hours Program
- Support via phone or web-based platforms
- Expert-led seminars and video curricula with CME credits available (UVM CORA Community Rounds)
